Spokane Chiefs News Release

Mac Engel stopped all 18 shots he faced in his first career win and shutout as the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Everett Silvertips 3-0 on Wednesday night in the Spokane Arena. The 17-year-old has taken over the starting goaltender reigns after James Reid was injured on Sunday night in Portland. Engel, a rookie from Red Deer, Alberta, earned his first decision in his 14th WHL appearance.

The win was the Chiefs' 30th of the season and allowed Spokane to keep pace with the Portland Winterhawks, 9-2 winners over Chilliwack, and remain just three points back of first place in the Western Conference. Spokane has 66 points and Portland 69. The Chiefs have two games in hand.

Two goals just 47-seconds apart in the second period proved to be the difference as Spokane outshot the Silvertips 48-18. Matt Marantz, from Brady Brassart and Tyler Vanscourt, scored at 4:56. Jared Cowen's snap shot on the power play at 5:43 made it a 2-0 game.

It remained that way until Levko Koper, who also assisted on the Cowen goal, found an empty net with 1:15 remaining. Tyler Johnson had an assist to extend his point scoring streak to a career high 15 games. The 20-year-old is second in the WHL in scoring.

Wednesday night's game was the first of three games in four nights in the Arena. The Chiefs will welcome the Chilliwack Bruins on Friday and Tri-City Americans on Saturday night.

Tickets to all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
