Chiefs Rebound with 4-2 Win Thursday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs bounced back from a rough loss the night before, taking game two of the series, 4-2 against the Great Lakes Loons Thursday night at O'Brien Field. Kyler Burke, who leads the league in doubles, came up big for the Chiefs doubling twice and driving in two of Peoria's runs.

The Chiefs took an early lead against the Loons in the first. With one down in the inning, Ryan Flaherty singled and advanced to third on a double by Rebel Ridling. Burke hit his 29th double to score Flaherty and Ridling and give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.

Great Lakes and Peoria exchanged runs in the second. Alfredo Silverio began the inning with a home run over the left-field wall off Chiefs starter Aaron Shafer to make it 2-1. The Chiefs answered back in their half of the second with Michael Brenly leading off the inning with a single but he was caught stealing second with Junior Lake at the plate. After Lake drew a walk and Andrew Rundle struck out swinging, David Macias doubled to score Lake and take a two run lead for the second time of the game 3-1.

The Loons made it a one-run ball game for the second time of the game in the fifth taking advantage of a Chiefs error. Anthony Hatch began the inning with a walk and after one out, Esteban Lopez singled to advance Hatch to second. Dee Gordon hit a potential ending-inning double play ball to second but Lake threw wild to first, allowing Hatch to score and cutting the Chiefs lead 3-2.

Peoria added an insurance run in the eighth. With one down, Burke hit his second double of the game and scored on a single by Jovan Rosa to make the score 4-2 going into the ninth. Chris Huseby came on in the ninth for the Chiefs and retired the side to end the game.

Shafer (6-5) picked up his sixth win of the season throwing five innings and giving up two runs, with one earned. The right-hander walked one and struck out five in the contest. Reliever Kevin Kreier held the lead for three shutout innings, giving up only three hits while striking out three. Huseby came on in the ninth to close out the game. He struck out two for his ninth save of the season.
