Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs pulled off a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over the Everett Silvertips in their regular season finale Wednesday night at Spokane Arena. It was 20-year-old winger Nick McCarry who scored the game-winner just ten seconds into the overtime frame of his last regular season home game as a Chief.

The win, coupled with a Prince George loss, vaulted the Chiefs past the Cougars in the Western Conference playoff race. Spokane now sits in sixth place with 51 points, one ahead of idle Vancouver and Victoria.

The Silvertips opened the scoring at 4:41 in the first period when defenseman Olen Zellweger found the twine for his 14th goal of the season.

But the Chiefs were quick to respond, capitalizing on the man-advantage not once, but twice - first at 7:44 when Chase Bertholet buried a cross-ice pass from Bear Hughes to tie it and then again just 26-seconds later when Cade Hayes snapped home a wrister from the left circle. Spokane outshot the 'Tips 9-5 in the first.

In the second, 18-year-old Mason Beaupit stopped 18 of 19 Everett shots on his way to 32 total saves for the night. The Silvertips evened the game with a power play goal of their own when Niko Huuhtanen scored at 3:20.

It would remain tied through the third despite 26 combined shots, 16 by the Chiefs.

Following the opening draw in overtime, defenseman Graham Sward stretched a pass through the neutral zone to the Everett blueline and found McCarry for the breakaway. The Calgary native's 22nd goal of the season gave the Chiefs their first win in 13 tries against Everett.

Fellow 20-year-old Hughes finished the night with 2 assists while seven other Chiefs tallied one point.

Everett's Koen MacInnnes stopped 28 of 31 Spokane shots.

The Chiefs finished 2-3 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.

Spokane's next game, at Seattle on Saturday night, can be seen live on SWX and heard on KEY 101 FM at 7:00. The Chiefs will play their final two games of the regular season in Victoria on March 15th and 16th.
