
Chiefs Lose Game, Series Friday

Cedar Rapids, IA - The third game of a season-long nine-game road trip did not to the Peoria Chiefs way as the visitors fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 7-1 Friday night in the rubber game of the series. The loss drops the Chiefs to 70-52 on the season and they finished the season series 6-7 against the Kernels, a potential Western Division Finals foe in September.
Cedar Rapids grabbed an unearned lead in the bottom of the first against Peoria starter Angel Rondon. Gabriel Maciel led off with a single and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by Rondon. A grounder moved Maciel to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Helman for a 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs tied the game in the third against Jordan Balazovic. Nick Plummer drew a walk with one out, moved to second on a groundout and a Wood Myers single put runners on the corners, Plummer scored to tie the game on a wild pitch though Myers was stranded at second.
Maciel led off the bottom of the third with a triple and he scored on another sacrifice fly by Helman to put the hosts back on top. They finished off the Chiefs with a four-run sixth inning as the Chiefs committed three errors and Trey Cabbage hit a three-run homer. Cabbage put the Kernels on top 7-1 with a single in the eighth off Fabian Blanco.
Rondon (3-1) suffered his first Chiefs loss as he allowed one earned run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He also surrendered five unearned runs and walked one. Zach Prendergast allowed one hit over 1 2/3 shutout innings. Blanco allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work.
Notes... Myers had all three of the Chiefs hits...Yariel Gonzalez, who was named a MWL Post-Season All-Star Friday, missed the game after fouling a ball off his knee Thursday and is listed as day-to-day...Peoria drew five walks and were hit by two pitches but also set a season high with 14 strikeouts...Plummer drew his 111th career walk, passing Tim Lemon (2000-03) for third on the Chiefs career list...Lemon walked 110 times in 438 career games while Plummer reached the mark in his 182nd career game...Nolan Gorman was kept off the basepaths for the first time in a Chiefs uniform...Cedar Rapids won the season series 7-6 as the teams split six games in Iowa...The Chiefs announced their 2019 schedule Friday and they open in Cedar Rapids April 4...The nine-game road trip continues in Davenport, Iowa as the Chiefs face the Quad Cities River Bandits in a first round playoff preview...The teams play six times over the next two weeks before also playing in the first round September 5-7...Saturday's game starts at 6:35 p.m. as the Chiefs send LH Jake Dahlberg (2-1, 2.14) to the mound against QC RH Edgardo Sandoval (1-1, 1.50)...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:20 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive and is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the Tune-In Radio App...The game is also available to subscribers on MiLB.TV.
