Chiefs Fall to Tri-City 5-3

The Spokane Chiefs fell to the division leading Tri-Cities Americans by a score of 5-3 in front of 9,819 fans on Saturday night in the Spokane Arena. Chiefs' goaltender Eric Williams made 29 stops in the effort, and was recognized as the game's second star for his strong play.

Spokane started the game off defensively, successfully killing three penalties in the first 15 minutes of the game. Mike Aviani produced the games first goal, redirecting a pass into the slot from Brendan Kichton at 16:42 to put Spokane ahead 1-0.

It looked as if Spokane would have a chance to add to the lead later in the period when the went on the power play that was the result of interference by the American's Sam Grist. A long shot by Justin Feser glanced of the stick of a Chiefs defender and found it's way in the top right corner of the net. The short handed goal came at 19:51 of the first period.

The Americans continued to creat offense shorthanded, scoring their second goal at 12:18 of the second period on a long Brendan Shinnimin snap shot.

Shinnimin scored again at 17:56 on the power play, giving Tri-Cities a 3-1 lead.

The Chiefs answered back in the third period with a shorthanded goal of their own. Dylan Walchuk set up Liam Stewart at 3:25 to make it a 3-2 game.

Grist gave Tri-Cities their two goal advantage back at 9:12 of the third, snapping a shot past a sprawling Eric Williams after the goaltender had made several spectacular saves in a row with the Chiefs being unable to clear the zone.

Spokane continued to fight, and was able to get one last goal on the power play at 14:54 with Mitch Holmberg finding the back of the net for his 22nd of the year.

The Americans sealed the victory with an empty net goal by Jesse Mychan with just 45-seconds left to play in the game.

Shots on goal favored the Americans by a margin of 34-27. The Chiefs finished the game 1-4 on the power play, although giving up two shorthanded goals, and were 6-7 on the penalty kill.
