Chiefs Fall 3-1 Monday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs lost the series opener against the Cedar Rapids Kernels 3-1 on Monday night. The loss drops to the Chiefs to 1-2 on the season with three games left in the series.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Taylor Bryant led off with a single against Kernels starting pitcher Blayne Enlow. Jonatan Machado moved him over with a groundout to second and Dylan Carlson walked. Yariel Gonzalez put the Chiefs on top 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Bryant.

Cedar Rapids answered in the top of the sixth inning against Chiefs starter Evan Guillory with two outs Jose Miranda drew a walk and Andrew Bechtold singled to right. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Ben Rortvedt gave the Kernels a 2-1 lead with a single to right field.

The Kernels added an insurance run in the top of the ninth against reliever Levi MaVorhis with two outs and a runner on second, Mark Contreras doubled to right field scoring Bechtold.

Down 3-1, the Chiefs threatened in the ninth against Jared Finkel. Irving Lopez led off with a single and with one out, Jonatan Machado punched a single up the middle. Carlson moved both runners up on a groundout to first. Gonzalez stepped in representing the game's winning run with Machado as the tying run at second. Gonzalez grounded out to first baseman Ben Rodriguez on a flip to the pitcher Finkel to end it.

Guillory (0-1) took the loss pitching 5 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs on nine hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. MaVorhis went two innings, letting up one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Fabian Blanco finished the top of the ninth as he allowed one walk in 1/3 of a shutout inning.
