Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - On a night that will be remembered for the Full-Season debut of 2017 first round draft pick Hunter Greene, the Dayton Dragons erased a 2-0 deficit and defeated the Lake County Captains 3-2 on Monday at Fifth Third Field. The win was the second straight for the Dragons after opening the year with three losses.
Hunter struck out eight batters in three innings without issuing a walk. He allowed five hits and two runs, getting most of his strikeouts on breaking pitches while throwing a fastball that ranged from 96-100 mph. The first three pitches of the game from Greene were clocked at 100.
Greene allowed two runs in the first inning, worked a perfect second, and then faced a tough jam in the third when Lake County put runners at second and third with no one out. But Greene struck out the next three hitters, the three, four, and five hitters in the Captains batting order, to work out of trouble.
Lake County took the lead with two runs in the top of the first inning when Austen Wade lined a two-out, two-run double to left field. Dragons pitchers held the Captains to no runs on four hits over the rest of the night.
The Dragons tied the game in the second inning. Miles Gordon started the rally when he walked with one out and stole second. Mark Kolozsvary lined a single to right field that advanced Gordon to third, and when Lake County right fielder Oscar Gonzalez bobbled the ball, Gordon scored. Hector Vargas singled to right to move Kolozsvary to third, and Narciso Crook's long sacrifice fly to center brought in Kolozsvary to tie the game.
The Dragons broke the tie in the sixth inning. Gordon singled to center with one out and Kolozsvary walked. Vargas grounded to second, and Lake County's Jorman Rodriguez fielded the ball and threw to second base for the force on Kolozsvary, but when Captains shortstop Tyler Friis dropped the ball on the exchange from his glove to his throwing hand, Gordon raced in to score to give the Dragons a 3-2 lead.
After Greene's three innings of work, Austin Orewiler (1-1) entered the game and gave the Dragons four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to earn the win. He walked two and struck out one. Tyler Buffett tossed a scoreless eighth inning, and Sarkis Ohanian struck out the side in order in the ninth for his first save.
The Dragons collected nine hits. Vargas and Jose Garcia each had two hits.
Up Next: The Dragons (2-3) host Lake County (4-1) again on Tuesday night at 7:00. Opening night starter Packy Naughton will pitch for the Dragons as they begin their second turn through the rotation. He will be opposed by Lake County's Eli Morgan.
All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
