Johnstown Chiefs News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC. - The Johnstown Chiefs were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers 6-2 on Saturday night handing the Chiefs their second loss in a row after a five-game unbeaten streak.

The loss dropped Johnstown's record to 3-8-3 on the season.

On Friday night Charlotte's Devin Didiomete was a pesky instigator that was trying all night to get under the Chiefs' skin. He put the rough stuff away early for Saturday's game but hurt the Chiefs on the scoreboard with his second goal of the season at 4:15. Daniel Tkaczuk then received a gift when a Johnstown dump in took a wild bounce off of the boards. As Trevor Hendrikx tried to work it in deep on the power play the disk jumped off the wall and right to Julien Brouillette. The defensement winged the puck up the ice to Tkaczuk as he left the zone and he was able to beat Kris Mayotte on the breakaway at 12:34.

The second period was a power play showcase for each team, but Johnstown found itself on the wrong end of the goal exchange with the Checkers potting two to Johnstown's one. Tyler Doig collected the first of the period to make it 3-0 Charlotte at 13:34. Dan Collins' third of the season put the Chiefs on the board three minutes and fifty seconds after Doig's marker. Mike Bartlett made a strong drive to the front of the net and his wrist shot off of Frank Doyle's pads left a juicy rebound out there for Collins. It was his third of the season. Hendrikx and Collins took penalties 59 seconds apart to give the Checkers a 5-on-3 opportunity late in the second and from the high slot Michel Leveille fired a wrist shot past Mayotte with just 10 seconds left in the period.

Russ Sinkewich gave Johnstown a lot of life early in the third with his second goal of the season. The slap shot from the left point squeezed through Doyle's pads and pulled the Chiefs within two just 1:35 into the final frame. The offense kicked into gear and peppered Doyle with a number of quality chances, but would not find the back of the net again. Roche at 11:06 and Brouillette at 16:13 provided insurance markers and set the final at 6-2.

Mayotte posted 28 saves in taking the loss while Johnstown finished 1-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-5 on the penalty kill.
