Alaska Aces News Release
BAKERSFIELD, California -- Still stinging from a 7-1 setback in Anchorage last Saturday, Bakersfield responded with four power play goals and a shorthanded tally in a 6-2 victory over Alaska before 4,795 Saturday at Rabobank Arena.
Twice Alaska held the lead in the first period, as Jason Ryznar (pictured) celebrated his first game in an Aces sweater with a goal to open the scoring at 3:11, assisted by Tomas Kana. Sasha Pokulok answered with the first of his two goals at 10:55. Colin Hemingway pushed Alaska back in front 2-1 with 1:35 to go in the period, blasting a slap shot past a screened Justin Pogge with the visitors on the power play. But the Condors countered with a power play goal of their own just 50 seconds later, Pokulok's eighth goal of the year (tops among ECHL defensemen), and the period ended deadlocked at 2-2.
Bakersfield continued to enjoy power play success in the second period, taking its first lead on defenseman Eric Regan's fifth goal of the season just 1:14 into the frame and extending the margin to 4-2 when Mathieu Aubin lifted a rebound over a prostrate Aces netminder, Sebastian Dahm, at 7:59 in a five-on-three situation. Alaska failed to convert a power play late in the second period and opened the third by surrendering a shorthanded goal, scored by Shawn Weller on a two-on-one set up by rookie Dan Sexton, who finished the night with four assists. Stephane Goulet added a power play goal, Bakersfield's fourth of the night, with 2:15 remaining to account for the final margin.
The Condors out-shot the Aces 40-18 and scored on four of their seven power plays, leaving Alaska with a 69.2% kill rate on the road as compared to 95.6% at home. Bakersfield (10-6) and Alaska (8-5-2) meet again tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. AT, with the Sunday series finale scheduled for 4:00 p.m. AT. Both contests will be broadcast live on the flagship home of Alaska pro hockey, KFQD 750 AM.
