Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Friday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads met in the second of a three-game series at Qwest Arena. Victoria's David Shantz started in goal while the Steelheads countered with Richard Bachman.
End-to-end action dominated the opening 20 minutes as neither team could hit the scoreboard. Shantz and Bachman turned aside every shot they faced; making 15 and 11 saves respectively. The Salmon Kings went scoreless on two power play advantages in the first period, while the Steelheads were 0-for-1. The teams skated into the first intermission in a scoreless tie.
The Steelheads took control in the second period with a power play goal off the stick of Mike Stuart to make it 1-0 Idaho. Stuart took a pass from Evan Barlow at the high point and fired a slap shot that beat a screened Shantz blocker side. Stuart's goal was his second of the season. The home team was awarded a penalty shot at the 10:51 mark of the frame when captain Marty Flichel was taken down on a partial breakaway. Flichel's free pass at the goaltender was denied by Shantz as his shot found the goaltender's right pad. Idaho doubled their lead to 2-0 at 12:46 when Mathieu Tousignant took a pass from Stuart all alone in front of the net, and put a nice backhand deke on Shantz to put the puck into the net. The Steelheads would take their 2-0 lead into the second intermission.
Idaho extended their lead to 3-0, at the 6:30 mark of the third period. Strong work in the left wing corner resulted in the puck being poked by Brandan Kushniruk out to Adam Huxley. The Idaho winger fired a shot that Shantz stopped, but Huxley was able to slip the rebound in. Ashton Rome put the Steelheads ahead by four with his seventh marker of the year. Idaho 4 Victoria 0.
The Salmon Kings went 0/40.0% on the power play, while the Steelheads were 1/520.0%. Idaho outshot Victoria 42-22.
Victoria and Idaho meet again tomorrow night to finish their three-game set. Puck drops at 6:10 p.m. PST. The Salmon Kings then return home to face the Ontario Reign for a two-game set with contests on Friday, November 27th, and Saturday, November 28th. Both games start at 7:10 p.m. For tickets, call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com
