Chiefs Blown Out In Finale Of Road Trip

Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs allowed a season-high five home runs on a windy Sunday afternoon and fell to the Clinton LumberKings 12-4. The loss concludes a 4-6 road trip and puts the Chiefs at 13-23 heading into a four-game homestand which starts Monday. Clinton got to Chiefs starter Zach Ashwood in the first inning. Renny Osuna walked with one out and Ian Gac homered to left for 2-0 lead. The homer is the MWL-leading 13th of the season for Gac, who also leads the league in RBI with 37.

The Chiefs got one run back in the second but left another on base. Marquez Smith led off with a double against L-Kings starter Blake Beaven. Jovan Rosa singled Smith to third and Elvis Lara put the Chiefs on the board with an infield RBI single. Beaven rebounded to get Marwin Gonzalez on an inning-ending double play.

Clinton exploded for eight runs over the next two innings as they powered three more balls out of the ballpark. With two on and two out in the second, Miguel Alfonzo took Ashwood deep to left for a 5-1 Clinton lead. Osuna hit the next pitch over the centerfield wall for a 6-1 advantage. With two down in the third inning, Cristian Santana hit his second home of the season to center for an 8-1 Clinton lead. After a walk and single, Todd Blackford relieved Ashwood and a Clinton run scored on an error by Gonzalez at shortstop. Tim Smith followed with a RBI single to give Clinton a 10-1 lead.

Peoria scored a pair off reliever Julio Santana in the sixth inning. Kyler Burke started the inning with a double off the wall in center and scored on a double by Smith. Rosa singled to center and Dylan Johnston was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lara delivered a sacrifice fly to left for a 10-3 score before Gonzalez bounced into another inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. The Chiefs added a run against Ryan Turner in the seventh when Rosa doubled and scored on a Lara single.

Gac hit his second homer of the game off Jordan Latham, a solo shot in the ninth. Clinton then added a second run on a wild pitch for the 12-4 victory.

Ashwood (0-5) suffers the loss in his first start since April 18. The lefty allowed a career-high 10 runs, eight earned, on eight hits over 2 2/3 innings. He walked four and allowed four home runs. Blackford held the L-Kings scoreless over 2 1/3 innings on two hits and a walk. Latham allowed two runs on three hits and five strikeouts over three innings.

Player of the Game - Elvis Lara (LF) - Lara drove home three of the Chiefs' four runs on the afternoon. He singled home a run in the second, delivered a sac fly in the sixth and singled home a run in the eighth. Lara drove home six runs in the series and finished 2-for-3.

Notes... Elvis Lara singled in the second to extend his hit streak a Chiefs season-best 10 games while he has reached base in all 11 games he has played...The Chiefs collected 10 or more hits in three straight games and five times on the road trip...Smith leads the Chiefs with 15 RBI...Nate Samson struck out for just the 10th time in 117 at-bats on the season...Seven Chiefs players had at least 10 hits on the road trip led by Lar and Smith with 13 each...The Chiefs have allowed a MWL high 31 home runs and Ashwood has surrendered a league-high seven...Peoria last allowed five homers in a game on may 1, 1997 at Madison...Peoria manager Ryne Sandberg served the second of his three-game suspension Sunday...The Chiefs return home Monday for a four-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits...The series is the only trip to Peoria this season for the St. Louis Cardinals MWL affiliate...Monday is a Sprint Money Monday with all tickets half-price...The Chiefs will send RH Ryan Acosta (0-1, 3.38) to the hill at 2:00 PM against RH Chuckie Fick (0-0, 6.00)...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
