Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that they have partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania (EFWCP) and Johnstown Rotary to raise awareness of seizures, helmet safety and head injury prevention, and the benefits of exercise.
Kris Mayotte, Sean Berkstresser, Troy Schwab, and Connor Shields from the Chiefs and a representative from the EFWCP will visit Westmont Elementary School on October 27th at 2:00 p.m. to present information on seizures, basic first aid, and the importance of wearing helmets to prevent head injuries. The students will get to interact with their favorite Chiefs players while learning more about the importance of sports safety and getting regular exercise. Each student will receive a free child's ticket with a purchase of an adult ticket to the November 11 Chiefs game against Reading at 7:35. Thanks to the Johnstown Rotary club, the school will receive bike helmets that they can give to children in need in their district. Westmont Elementary was the first school to participate in this free program.
Head injuries are one of the known and preventable causes of epilepsy/seizure disorders. The EFWCP and the Johnstown Chiefs are committed to providing education and services related to the prevention of head injuries. Through the Project School Alert program, school staff, faculty and students receive valuable information regarding seizure recognition, first aid and injury prevention.
Area schools interested in bringing this program to their students should contact Mary Grattan-Neely at mgrattan@efwp.org or (814) 262-7494.
The EFWCP is dedicated to the prevention, control, and community understanding of epilepsy/seizure disorders. Its nationally-recognized services include public education, information, referral, employment training, advocacy, summer camp, community education events, seminars and workshops. The EFWCP endeavors to improve the quality of life for people with epilepsy/seizure disorders and to dispel the myths, stigmas and misunderstandings associated with it.
