Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Wednesday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met in a three-game set to open the home portion of Victoria's 2009-10 schedule at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings started Glenn Fisher in net while the Condors countered with Timo Peilmeier.
The Salmon Kings set the early pace resulting in an early 12-0 lead in shots, but could not convert the game's opening goal. Both teams skated into the intermission in a scoreless tie.
Bakersfield would take advantage of an early powerplay and open the scoring at the 5:01 mark when an errant Dan Sexton slap shot deflected back into the crease off the glass to a waiting Shawn Weller. The Condors forward pushed the puck into the crease and it bounced off the back of a down and out Fisher. At 11:38 mark Adam Naglich was awarded a penalty shot, but Fisher kept the Condors at bay as he squeezed his pads together in time to deny the former Victoria Salsas' shot. The Condors had a second chance to take a two-goal lead late in the period when a goalmouth scramble in front of Fisher resulted in forward Stephane Goulet having an open-net opportunity. Goulet would attempt to slide the puck along the ice into the net but was denied by the stick of Salmon Kings defenseman Brandon Roach on the goal line. The Condors took their 1-0 lead into the second intermission.
The Salmon Kings' Adam Taylor knotted the score at 1-1 at the 12:33 mark when he took a pass from Gary Gladue into the left wing corner and fired the puck at the goaltender. The puck would deflect off a Condors defending player and past Peilmeier. One minute after Taylor's first goal of the season, Condors forward Logan MacMillan was denied the go-ahead goal just outside the goalmouth on a pretty passing play forcing Fisher to make a diving stop to his right. The Salmon Kings' goaltender would not be able to stop a John DeGray shot from the left wing boards that eluded him glove-side. Degray's go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal was his first of the year. Sasha Pokuluk would add an empty-net goal at 19:59. Condors 3 Salmon Kings 1.
The Salmon Kings finished 0/4 0.0% on the powerplay while the Condors were 1/3 33.3%. Both teams put 30 shots on goal.
The Salmon Kings and Condors meet again this Friday, October 23rd and Saturday October 24th. Puck drop for both games is 7:05p.m. Saturday's game is SELL-OUT Saturday - fans can purchase two adult and two child's tickets for just $25!
