Chiefs and Yankees Split Doubleheader

Moosic, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, split a doubleheader on Thursday evening with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre won game one by a 2-1 final and Syracuse took the second game 6-3.

In the first game, Syracuse (28-18) got on the board in the fourth inning when Pete Orr was hit by a pitch by Yankees starter Zach McAllister (4-2). Two batters later, Kevin Mench doubled to score Orr. The Chiefs went into the fifth with a 1-0 lead.

In that bottom of the fifth inning, Shairon Martis (2-3) gave up a single and a walk to Chad Huffman and Reid Gorecki to start things off. Matt Cusick got Huffman around with a sacrifice fly and Greg Golson scored Gorecki on an RBI single. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (28-19) would not relinquish that lead.

Yankees closer Jonathan Albaladejo finished off the first game with his 15th save of the season. The Chiefs and Yankees resumed play thirty minutes later for their second seven-inning ballgame of the day.

Jeff Mandel (2-0) started for Syracuse and pitched five innings of one-run baseball to earn the win in game two. Scranton's Kei Igawa (2-1) was the loser going three innings and giving up three runs.

Syracuse scored first in game two when Josh Whitesell knocked in Pete Orr in the first inning. The Chiefs scored twice in the third, twice in the fourth, and once more in the fifth.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre score once in the third and twice in the sixth. Joel Peralta finished off the second ballgame to earn his 14th save of the season.

The Chiefs and Yankees will play game three of the two-day series on Friday night at PNC Field. Scheduled starters are Erik Arnesen (0-0, 0.00) for Syracuse and Dustin Moseley (1-2,4.72) for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
