Chiefs' All-Star Rohan Promoted to Daytona

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that All-Star third baseman Greg Rohan has been promoted to High-A Daytona while RHP Matt Loosen returns from Double-A Tennessee. The Chiefs also add third baseman Dustin Geiger from Mesa of the Arizona Rookie League to get to a full 25-man roster for the first time since June 26.

Rohan, 25, leaves as the Chiefs leader in batting average and his .314 mark is currently fourth in the Midwest League. Rohan also had 92 hits, good for sixth in the league despite sitting out Saturday night's 13 inning loss. Rohan hit five homers and drive in 52 runs with 20 doubles and 34 runs scored in 76 games played this season. He drew 24 walks with a .368 on-base percentage and a .433 slugging percentage while mostly batting third or fourth in the Chiefs lineup. The Ohio native played third base, first base and left field for the Chiefs. Last season Rohan hit .298 in 75 games for the Chiefs with five homers, 53 RBI, 17 doubles and 40 runs scored before a July 10 promotion to Daytona. He finished the 2010 season hitting .250 in 41 games with one homer, eight doubles and 15 RBI for the Daytona Cubs. Rohan leaves 11th on the Chiefs career list with 105 RBI, tied for 18th with 179 hits, 20th in total bases (252), tied for 18th with 37 doubles, and tied for 10th with eight sacrifice flies.

Loosen returns to the Chiefs after two starts with Double-A Tennessee in which he was 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA. He will start on Monday against Fort Wayne and last threw on July 13 when he allowed three runs on three hits and five walks in a loss at Mississippi. Loosen, 21, joined the Chiefs on June 16 and made quite an impact going 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three games and two starts. A native of Malverne, NY, Loosen was drafted last June out of Jacksonville University in the 23rd round. He was 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 2010 splitting time between the Mesa Cubs and the Boise Hawks. Before joining the Chiefs on June 16, Loosen was 0-0 with a 5.19 ERA in three relief outings for the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League.

Geiger, 19, will be the youngest player on the Chiefs roster as he moves up from the Arizona Rookie League Mesa Cubs. With Mesa this season, the third baseman hit .342 with 14 runs scored, two homers and 20 RBI in 19 games. He was 0-for-4 on Saturday night but hit safely in 15 games for Mesa this season. He has thrived with runners on base, hitting .405 with 19 RBIs. Geiger made 35 starts at third base for the Mesa Cubs in 2010. He hit .244 with 30 hits, nine doubles, and 15 RBI in 123 plate appearances. The 19-year-old graduated from Merritt Island (Fla.) High School in May 2010. In his final season of high school baseball, he helped guide the Merritt Island Mustangs to a record of 22-3. He was also selected as an All-State honorable mention. Geiger was selected by the Cubs in the 24th round (730th overall) in the 2010 draft and made his professional debut on July 10, 2010 with Mesa.

The Chiefs continue a three-game series against Fort Wayne on Sunday with Princess Day, $2 kids tickets and all the kids 12-and-under can run the bases after the game. All fans can play catch on the field pre game and Chiefs players will sign autographs. Monday, July 18 is Splash Day with half-priced tickets and an 11:00 a.m. start.
