Chiefs Struggle Against Fort Wayne in 16-7 Sunday Loss

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs allowed 16 runs on 18 hits in a 16-7 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Sunday afternoon. The loss gives Fort Wayne the series win and drops Peoria to 42-51 overall on the season.

Fort Wayne took the early lead after smart base running by Rico Noel. Noel began the game with a single into left field off of Chiefs' starter Luis Liria (0-1). After two quick outs, Luis Domoromo hit a bloop single to left field, moving Noel to third base. Noel scored after left fielder Ben Klafczynski flipped the ball to second base, and Noel smartly dashed to home plate to give the TinCaps the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half, Peoria used the help of a fielding error to even the score against TinCaps' starter Todd Privett. With one out, Arismendy Alcantara reached on a fielding error by second baseman Cory Spangenberg and used his speed to come home on a two-out, RBI double from Richard Jones for a 1-1 ballgame.

However, it didn't take long for the TinCaps to break the tie. B.J. Guinn was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning and Chris Bisson walked to put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Cory Spangenberg hit a ground ball to Peoria's shortstop Arismendy Alcantara. Alcantara made a throwing error allowing both runners to score, giving Fort Wayne the 3-1 advantage.

Again, Peoria responded in the bottom half of the same inning with another Jones RBI double. Rubi Silva reached with one out in the inning after a fielding error by Fort Wayne's starter Todd Privett (1-0). Alcantara made up for his error with a double in the left-field corner to put two runners in scoring position for Jones, after Cuneo grounded out. Jones smashed a double to right field scoring Silva and Alcantara and tying the game at three.

In the middle stages of the game, Fort Wayne began to pull away as the TinCaps added a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the fourth, Connor Powers led off with a long home run to straightaway center field to give Fort Wayne its third lead of the day. After a couple of outs, Guinn extended the inning with a base hit to right and moved to second on a wild pitch before Bisson made it 5-3 with a RBI single to left. In the fifth, Spangenberg drove a leadoff double deep to center field and Rymer Liriano made it 7-3 with one swing of the bat. Liriano drove the first pitch he saw from Liria over the fence in straightaway center field for a two-run shot and his 10th of the season.

After holding the Chiefs scoreless, Fort Wayne continued its offensive barrage of runs in the sixth inning. Robinson Lopez relieved Liria on the mound, but the TinCaps' lineup continued to bash hits. Cole Tyrell, Guinn, and Bisson all singled to begin the inning, loading the bases. A wild pitch scored Tyrell, before the bases were loaded again because Noel was hit by a pitch. Spangenberg hit into a fielder's choice at second base but it scored Guinn. With runners on the corners, Liriano snapped a single into right field to score Bisson. After getting the second out, Powers singled to right loading the bases once again. Wes Cunningham flung a single into right field, scoring two and increasing the TinCaps' lead to 12-3 before Lopez struck out Tyrell to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Giansanti led the inning off with a single. Burruel replaced him at first base after grounding into a fielder's choice. Silva singled into right, moving Burruel to second. Next, Alcantara grounded into a fielder's choice, moving Burruel to third. Burruel scored on a wild pitch, making the game 12-4. Peoria added another run in the eighth inning after Ben Klafczynski drove home Elliot Soto.

After Giansanti took the mound in the ninth inning, Emmanuel Quiles drove a home run to left field to start the inning. After two Chiefs errors, a three-run homer by Luis Domoromo gave Fort Wayne a commanding 16-5 lead.

Peoria scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game. Burruel led off with a double to center, moved to third when Silva grounded out, and scored on a wild pitch by Robert Lara. With one out, Alcantara singled and scored when Ryan Cuneo doubled to right for the final run of the game.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Richard Jones (DH) - Jones hit two RBI doubles that tied the game in both instances. Jones went two-for-four with three RBI and a walk as the designated hitter.
