Spokane Chiefs News Release

The Spokane Chiefs have added 16-year-old forward Mike Aviani to their roster through January 5th. Aviani was Spokane's fifth round selection in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft and has scored 18 goals and 30 points in 23 games with the Grandview Steelers of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League. The Surrey, BC native will be in the lineup on Sunday night when the Chiefs host the Portland Winterhawks at 6:00 in the Spokane Arena.

The winner of the game will stake claim to second place in the U.S. Division as they enter the weekend tied with 45 points, seven points behind the first place Tri-City Americans. Portland has played four more games than Spokane. The road team has won the four previous games against each other including Portland's 3-2 win on December 16th in Spokane. Prior to that, the Chiefs had won the previous two in Portland by scores of 1-0 on November 1st and 5-4 in a December 6th shootout.

The Portland game will mark Spokane's first action after an eight day holiday break and Chiefs come into the game minus five regulars who are participating in two separate tournaments. Sixteen-year-olds Mitch Holmberg and Brady Brassart are playing for Team Pacific at the under-17 World Hockey Challenge while defensemen Jared Cowen and Stefan Ulmer are playing for Canada and Austria, respectively, and Tyler Johnson is playing for the United States at the World Junior Hockey Championships. The World Junior tournament began on Saturday while the World Hockey Challenge begins on Tuesday.

On Sunday night, the Chiefs will be wearing a special 25th Anniversary Jersey presented by Miller Brewing Company, 93.7 the Cat and KREM 2. Fans will have an opportunity to sign up to win one of the game worn commemorative jerseys at the game. Ten fans that were selected from entries at Miller Brewing Company displays have already been selected to win the jerseys while another 10 will be selected at the game.

Tickets for all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
