Chicago Stars FC News Release
Chicago, Illinois - Chicago Red Stars forward Sofia Huerta has been voted NWSL Player of the Month for May 2015 by members of the media. The 22-year-old receives the honor following a month of standout play that saw her score a total of five goals in as many matches and make history in the process, as she took home the first back-to-back Player of the Week honors in league history for her performances against Boston Breakers in Week 5 and Houston Dash in Week 6.
A rookie out of Santa Clara University, Huerta won her first reward after dominating in the 3-0 home victory over Boston on May 9, bagging her first two goals and her first assist as a professional. The Idaho native opened the scoring by latching on to a Vanessa DiBernardo through ball in the 56th minute and rounding the goalkeeper for an excellent finish, followed by an assist to Cara Walls and a first-time strike on Arin Gilliland's cross eight minutes from full time.
Huerta continued to shine in the away game at Houston on May 15, as her second straight brace helped Chicago battle back from 2-0 down to earn a point on the road. After burying a Jen Hoy through ball around the hour mark, the striker leveled the score in the 81st minute with an impressive individual effort. A waist-high ball by Arin Gilliland was laid off by Walls and Huerta cut to her left with some skillful footwork before blasting a low drive past outstretched goalkeeper Bianca Henninger to make it 2-2.
Huerta found the net again in the massive 2-1 away win over defending champs FC Kansas City on May 23, bringing her streak of consecutive games with tallies to three and tying her for first in the league goal-scoring race.
2015 NWSL College Draft pick Huerta follows in the footsteps of Chicago teammate Christen Press, who has been away with the U.S. Women's National Team preparing for the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup and who won NWSL Player of the Month for April.
