June 3, 2015 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) News Release

CHICAGO (June 3, 2015) - Chicago Red Stars' forward Sofia Huerta was voted the National Women's Soccer League Player of the Month by the media for the month of May of the 2015 NWSL season.

Huerta, 22, has scored five goals over five games in May, helping Chicago remain in the number one spot of the standings with a 4-0-3 record going into Week 9 of the campaign.

The NWSL rookie's five goals in seven games in all of 2015 has her as the league's second leading scorer, right behind Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn, who leads with six goals.

Huerta's first two goals of the season came in the Red Stars 3-0 victory over the Boston Breakers in Week 5, in which Huerta also recorded an assist.

The Boise, Idaho native recorded her second brace against the Houston Dash during Week 6, with a crucial goal in the 81st minute of the match. That second goal from Huerta would help Chicago keep their unbeaten record intact and end the game in a 2-2 draw.

The former Santa Clara University star's fifth goal came in Week 7 as the Red Stars played on the road against FC Kansas City . Huerta's late strike in the first half would lead the way for Chicago's 2-1 victory over the Blues.

She is the second Chicago Red Stars player to be named National Women's Soccer League Player of the Month. Teammate Christen Press received the honor last month when she was named Player of the Month for April.

The Chicago Red Stars will return to action Saturday, June 6 at 7:00 p.m. ET against Western New York Flash at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.

The National Women's Soccer League Player of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
