Chicago Sky Re-Signs Defensive Stopper Tamera Young
CHICAGO, February 21, 2012 - Chicago Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman announced today that the team has re-signed Tamera Young for the 2012 season. Per team policy, terms of the contract have not been released.
"Tamera's consistent effort, especially on the defensive end of the floor, was quite impressive throughout the season. Her energy is infectious, and was key in her averaging nearly 8ppg. She brings a blue collar mentality that doesn't always show up on a stat sheet, but is instrumental in a team's success."
In 2011, Tamera started 19 games for the Sky and had a career best season averaging 7.9 points, 1.7 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. She had a season high 20 points in a 107-101 win against Connecticut on June 23 and a career high 15 rebounds against Connecticut on August 9, she scored in double figures twelve times finishing the season with the fourth best scoring average on the team.
"I arrived in Chicago two and a half years ago with my heart and mind focused on helping this team win a WNBA championship. We have some unfinished business to take care of! Pokey's contagious energy has revitalized this entire organization from top to bottom. I am excited to continue this journey with her as the Head Coach, along with a truly committed owner in Michael Alter, and the best fans in the WNBA"
Young was drafted by the Atlanta Dream in the first round (8th overall) of the 2008 WNBA Draft and became the first ever athlete from James Madison University to play in the WNBA, she also holds the CAA and school scoring record (2,121). Tamera was acquired by the Sky in exchange for Armintie Price on August 12, 2009. Young has averaged 6.7 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, and 1.2 assists per game in her WNBA career.
