CHICAGO, Ill. - The Chicago Red Stars played a hard fought, chippy match against the Washington Spirit, and were able to walk away with one point in the standings with a 0-0 draw.
KEY MOMENTS:
4' Mallory Pugh makes a deep run into Washington's territory off of a clearance pass from Alyssa Naeher that ends in a corner kick for the Red Stars
9' Sarah Luebbert is able to make a run into the Spirit's box to take a shot, but Kingsbury is able to get her gloves on the shot
14' Luebbert rebounds a deflected cross outside the Spirit's 18-yard box, takes a shot that goes just over the cross bar
34' Rachel Hill heads a shot toward the Washington goal off of a Pugh free kick, but the ball hits the post and goes out for a goal kick
48' The Spirit put a dangerous header toward the Red Stars' goal but quick reflexes from Naeher keeps the ball out of the net
GAME NOTES:
In what felt like an evenly fought match, the Red Stars were outshot by Washington 13 to 8, but the Red Stars were able to get the ball in front of the net with better accuracy getting 5 shots on target to Washington's 3. Both teams tied with 6 shots from inside the box
Showing true Chicago grit, Vanessa DiBernardo and Colaprico commanded the middle of the field for the Red Stars, both ranking first and second respectfully in recoveries and in the top 5 in completed passes.
Naeher, along with the backline of Milazzo, Morse and Sharples, put up another impressive performance withstanding a strong Washington attacking front and winning possession 25 times throughout the match
