BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars announce today that they have signed defender Whitney Engen, a first-round (fourth overall) selection in the 2010 Women's Professional Soccer Draft.
"Hands down she was the top defender coming out of college, and having the opportunity to play with our defensive experience will raise her game to the next level," Red Stars Head Coach Emma Hayes said. "She's very coachable and a great learner. She picks things up quickly. Her overall package is exceptional and she's a great all-around player."
"I've had the opportunity to work with [Red Stars defender] Kate Markgraf for the past 10, 11 days, and I have learned so much from her," Engen said. "While there might be high expectations from me on the field, I feel like I'm not putting a lot of pressure on myself because I am surrounded by some phenomenal players. So I'm soaking it all in and I am trying to make my learning curve a little bit shorter."
Engen also is getting the opportunity to showcase her defensive play at the national team level. On March 8, U.S. Women's National Team head coach Pia Sundhage announced Engen as one of 24 players who are participating in a training camp to prepare for two matches against Mexico on March 28 and 31.
Engen was a center defensive back for North Carolina in 2008 and 2009. But she started her collegiate career as a forward for the Tar Heels in 2006 and 2007, posting 57 points (18 goals, 21 assists) during that two-year stretch.
Per team policy, terms of Engen's contract agreement are not released.
The Chicago Red Stars are members of Women's Professional Soccer and play their home games at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. The Red Stars enter their second season in the eight-team WS, and their 2010 home opener takes place on Saturday, April 17, against Saint Louis Athletica.
