The Chicago Red Stars dropped their preseason exhibition opener against their Women's Professional Soccer counterpart, the Washington Freedom, 2-1, on Friday at the Indian River Soccer Association's Hobart Soccer Complex in Vero Beach, Fla.

Red Stars forward Ella Masar netted Chicago's lone goal in the second half, but Chicago could not overcome the Freedom's strong start. Washington built a 2-0 lead through the first half, with the Freedom's Sarah Huffman and Lisa De Vanna each posting a goal.

Masar cut into the Freedom's lead in the 61st minute when she tallied a 35-yard strike, catching Washington's goalkeeper off the line, to trim the score to 2-1.

"I think in the first half, this was the first time that we played together and it showed," Red Stars Head Coach Emma Hayes said. "Washington exploited that. But the longer the game went on, the better we got, and we were more comfortable with the ball. We were more organized defensively. We got out of this game what we wanted to."

The Red Stars' preseason continues next Wednesday, March 17, when they face the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla. Game time is at 6:30 p.m. CT.
