Chicago Stars FC News Release
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer announce today the move of defender and midfielder Lydia Vandenbergh to the organization's first-team roster. Per team policy, terms of her contract are not released.
Vandenbergh has spent the 2010 season as a developmental player for Chicago, playing in three matches (one start) and logging 109 minutes.
"I think her versatility is her biggest asset," Red Stars Head Coach Omid Namazi said. "She's able to play in the midfield and on the left side as a defender, and that gives us different options where we can be flexible with where she plays. She's a steady player who doesn't make a lot of mistakes, and she's a calming influence."
Vandenbergh first signed with the Red Stars during the 2009 WPS season, when she played in six matches, made three starts and logged 311 minutes.
The WPS trade deadline is at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, where teams' 18 first-team player rosters are frozen for the remainder of the season. Transactions involving developmental players still are allowed following this deadline.
The Red Stars (5-9-6, 21 points) get set for their final road match of the regular season against the Washington Freedom (5-8-6, 21 points) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, in Boyds, Md. Chicago's next home match takes place at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, against four-time FIFA Women's Player of the Year Marta and first-place FC Gold Pride (televised on Fox Soccer Channel).
