KENNESAW, GA - The Atlanta Beat (4-9-5) face the Philadelphia Independence (8-6-4) Sunday in the first of two back-to-back road games for a fourth and final meeting between the two expansion teams.
The Beat look to return to winning form after falling 2-1 to Sky Blue FC (NY/NJ) on Aug. 7 and 2-0 to the Boston Breakers on Aug. 4. Prior to the Aug. 4 match, the Beat were unbeaten in four straight games, earning points against Sky Blue FC (1-0 win, 3 points), the Chicago Red Stars (1-0 win, 3 points), the Washington Freedom (3-2 win, 3 points), and FC Gold Pride (0-0 tie, 1 point).
The Beat are currently in seventh place in the standings with 17 points, just behind the Washington Freedom and Chicago Red Stars who are tied at 21 points apiece. With five games remaining, the Beat must defeat the Independence this weekend and the Breakers six days later to arrive at 23 points. Both Washington and Chicago will meet head to head on Thursday, Aug. 19 and must tie for the Beat to remain in playoff contention.
The Atlanta Beat and midfielder Sophia Mundy mutually terminated contract terms, Thursday.
