Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO, IL (Nov. 17, 2010) - Major League Soccer's most outstanding individual plays were honored today as Chicago Fire midfielder Marco Pappa earned the 2010 AT&T Goal of the Year. Of the 591 goals tallied in MLS regular season play in 2010, the 23-year-old Guatemalan's wonder-strike against the San Jose Earthquakes was named the league's top goal.
"To win the best goal in 2010 is a big moment in my career and for me individually," said Fire midfielder Pappa. "It is a nice honor for the club, as I have worked hard this year to do my best for the Fire."
On Saturday, April 10, in front of the largest Opening Night crowd in TOYOTA PARK history, Pappa struck a left-footed rocket that bent around San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Brandon MacDonald and curled into the upper right corner of the goal, out of goalkeeper Joe Cannon's reach.
Pappa becomes the third Fire midfielder to win the MLS Goal of the Year Award and first since Cuauhtémoc Blanco captured the award for his stunning left-footed volley against Real Salt Lake Aug. 18, 2007. Damani Ralph was honored with the award for his goal against the Columbus Crew April 22, 2000.
