Chicago Fire FC News Release

The Chicago Fire (6-10-8, 26 points) fight for their playoff lives as they embark on a crucial seven-day Western Conference swing that pits the Men in Red against the 6th and 5th teams in the MLS Cup Playoff standings. The Fire challenge former teammates Jon Busch, Tim Ward and the San Jose Earthquakes (11-7-6, 39 points) on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 10:00PM CT (CLTV/Comcast SportsNet Chicago Plus). From San Jose, the Fire head to Dallas to battle for the Brimstone Cup on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 PM CT (FSC/FSE).

The midweek fixture will go a long way in determining the Fire's MLS Cup Playoff hopes. With six matches remaining, the Men in Red sit 11 points back of the Colorado Rapids for the eighth and final postseason spot. A win would stoke the flames of a possible playoff run, a loss would all but end the club's chances for an 12th playoff appearance in its 13 year history

On Saturday, the Fire will search to reclaim the Brimstone Cup for the first time since 2001. FC Dallas (11-2-13, 46 points) has either won or retained the cup eight of the previous nine seasons, with the Fire only raising the trophy in the competition's inaugural year - 2001. The Cup is awarded to the team with the most points in matches played between the two sides. If both teams have the same number of points at the end of the season the Cup remains with the club who held it at the beginning of the season.

CHICAGO FIRE UNVEIL A HISTORIC MURAL IN PILSEN COMMUNITY

The Chicago Fire Soccer Club unveiled the restoration of a nearly 13-year-old mural depicting the storied history of the Chicago Fire on 1030 West 16th street (Carpenter Road an 16th street) in Pilsen last Wednesday, Sept. 22. The restoration, led by local artist Oscar Romero, is part of the Fire's continued efforts to strengthen relationships within the Hispanic community in support of the Fire's Hispanic Heritage night match between the Fire and Seattle Sounders FC at TOYOTA PARK on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 PM CT (My50).

Romero began painting the Fire-themed mural in 1998, when he created a mural of Fire icons Jorge Campos and Roman Kosecki playing soccer within the fabled walls of Soldier Field, the Fire's first home. Over the last 18 months, the club has worked closely with members of the Hispanic community including Romero, Alderman Daniel Solis and staff, Fire supporters' group Section 8 and BEHR Paint representative Oscar Mendoza, who were all in attendance at the historic unveiling, in the restoration and modern day additions of TOYOTA PARK to the historic mural. Fire head coach Carlos de los Cobos was also on-hand to help commemorate the event and provide the mural a present day connection to the Fire.

CHICAGO FIRE UPENDED BY SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC 1-0

Seattle Sounders FC forward Blaise Nkufo snuck the ball past Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson in the 88th minute to give Seattle Sounders FC a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire Saturday night at TOYOTA PARK.

Steve Zakuani sent a weighted ball into the space on the left side, finding a hustling Nkufo with room to work. The Swiss Designated Player dribbled to the touchline, cut back and blasted a shot that deflected off of a sliding C.J. Brown and under Johnson for the game's lone goal.

The loss drops the Fire to 6-10-8, with 26 points and leaves the Men in Red 12 points back of the Colorado Rapids for the 8th and final MLS Cup Playoff spot with six games to play. The Fire suffered its third loss of the season at home and extend their winless streak to seven games.

Treating the game as a must-win, the Fire blitzed Sounders FC early, nearly taking the lead when Marco Pappa darted in on goal in Seattle's offensive third. The Fire's leading scorer fired a low, driven shot, but was unable to power his effort under Seattle Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller in the 4th minute.

The Fire came close to breaking the deadlock again in the 29th minute, when former Sounder Freddie Ljungberg found John Thorrington wide open just inside the 18-yard box on the right side. The 31-year-old veteran took a touch toward goal and sliced an unselfish pass toward a cutting Calen Carr, but the cross was deflected before it could reach its intended target.
