Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO - Chicago Fire FC today announced that the Club has reached an agreement with Ligue 1 club RC Lens for the transfer of midfielder Przemysław Frankowski. The 26-year-old will join RC Lens upon completion of a medical. Per Club policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"On behalf of the entire Club, I would like to thank Przemysław for his contributions to the Chicago Fire," said Sporting Director Georg Heitz. "This move demonstrates that young players can develop within our environment and contribute in a meaningful way before transitioning to a top-five league in the world. He has fully earned this opportunity and we wish him and his family all the best as they embark on this new chapter."
"I would like to thank the Club and the fans for the amazing times that I had in a great Club and city," said Frankowski. "Chicago will always be my second home. I made so many great memories in Chicago, including the birth of my son. All that's left for me to do is to thank you all again and I wish the Club all the best for the future."
Originally joining the Fire on Jan. 22, 2019, at age 23, Frankowski made 63 regular season appearances (52 starts) in two-and-a-half seasons with the Club. During that stretch, the Polish international scored 10 goals and notched a team-high 13 assists. Additionally, he earned 11 caps for the Poland National Team, including two appearances at the UEFA EURO 2020.
"Przemysław has been an important player for the Fire, and I've really enjoyed working with him," added Head Coach Raphael Wicky. "He has shown tremendous growth during his time here and we are incredibly proud to see him take the next step in his professional career. We wish him the best of luck for the future."
Prior to joining the Fire, Frankowski spent seven seasons in the Polish first division, appearing in over 180 matches for two different clubs. A native of Gdańsk, Poland, Frankowski began his professional career with his hometown team Lechia Gdańsk in 2012, before joining Jagiellonia Białystok in the 2014-15 campaign.
RC Lens competes in Ligue 1, the highest division in France, and will begin their 2021-22 campaign on Sunday, Aug. 8. The club finished the 2020-21 season in seventh place, just shy of a UEFA Europa League berth.
