CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced today that they will hold their second annual "Pink in the Rink" game presented by Hardee's on Sunday, Feb. 10 against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. The game will benefit the American Cancer Society, Carolina Breast Friends and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charlotte Affiliate.

The Checkers will wear special pink jerseys bearing the logos of the three organizations and there will be a live jersey auction following the game with the proceeds going to the foundations.

"The American Cancer Society is very excited to team up with the Charlotte Checkers for another fantastic Pink in the Rink event. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive walk to help fight breast cancer and provide hope to people facing the disease. Funds raised through Making Strides go directly to breast cancer research, awareness, education, and support programs. Pink in the Rink is a wonderful vehicle to get the word out about, not only Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, but the American Cancer Society's other programs and services as well. We are delighted to be a part of such a wonderful community event," said Shelley Minor, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program manager.

Komen Charlotte executive director, Gloria Scienski said "Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charlotte Affiliate is pleased to join the Charlotte Checkers in 'Pink In the Rink.' Komen for the Cure's promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. The Charlotte Checkers are joining us to help women and men by raising funds and encouraging the practice of habits that will lead to a healthier tomorrow. By participating in events like 'Pink in the Rink' we are able to share our vision of a world without breast cancer. "

"We are so honored to be involved with the Charlotte Checkers for the second annual Pink in the Rink," said Rene Timpone, vice president of Carolina Breast Friends. "We thank the Checkers for sharing our unique effort to support the breast cancer survivor during this most difficult time of their life. "It is an enlivening event that brings the whole family together and raises awareness of this disease which knows no age, gender or race. And, my gosh, we get to see hockey players wear pink!"

"Pink in the Rink is one of my very favorite events. As an organization, the Checkers are so lucky to be able to work with three such great groups. We all have such fun, while at the same time raising funds and awareness. You honestly cannot ask for more than that. In addition, the fan support that this event garners is simply fantastic and I look forward to bringing it to a new level this season. In one way or another everyone has been touched by a women's related cancer so this event is supported by a very diverse mix of people." said Charlotte Checkers vice president Tera Black,

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Carolina Breast Friends

Established in November 2003 by Kristy Adams-Ebel, CBF is a Charlotte based non-profit organization committed to uniting and helping women with breast cancer in all stages of their journey; diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. After treatment, the breast cancer survivor lives with fear of recurrence and metastasis. Our members are women who have walked the same path and are available to provide support, encouragement, information and assistance. Our fundraising goal is to build a state of art facility in Charlotte, Project Pink House, it will be designed and customized as a sanctuary for the hopeful transition from treatment to cure.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure

In 1982, Susan G. Komen for the Cure launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
