Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, NC - Saturday, October 16 - The Charlotte Checkers closed out their preseason schedule with a narrow 4-3 defeat to the Augusta Lynx Saturday night at Cricket Arena. The Checkers held a 3-2 lead entering the final period but a pair of Augusta goals in a 32 second span proved to be the winning margin. Charlotte applied heavy pressure in the final minute in an attempt to tie the game and nearly did. A goal-mouth scramble saw the puck fall on the goal line but not over it, and the referee ruled correctly and the goal was waived off. Rory Rawlyk had a pair of goals for the Checkers including a short-handed tally, and Mike Wirll added two assists. Rookie Ryan Glenn had the other Charlotte goal. Goalie Alex Westlund saw his first action as a Checker yielding two goals in 40 minutes of play, with rookie netminder Mike Ayers playing the third period and taking the loss.

‚¬Å“We did some good things tonight and we definitely have some things we can build on, ‚¬Â remarked Checkers coach Derek Wilkinson. ‚¬Å“That ‚¬â„¢s what the preseason is for and when you have young guys they are going to make some mistakes. I feel our guys will be jumping and ready to start the regular season next weekend. ‚¬Â

Charlotte split its two-game preseason schedule with the Lynx after winning 4-3 in a shootout Friday night in Augusta. The Checkers will open the regular season this Friday night, October 22 in Greenville, South Carolina when ‚¬â„¢ll take on the Grrrowl at 7:05 p.m. Charlotte will stage its home opener on Saturday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Cricket Arena when it will host the Columbia Inferno.
