San Diego Gulls News Release

MIRA MESA, Calif. – It figured to be a penalty-filled game when the San Diego Gulls took on the Long Beach Ice Dogs Sunday night at the San Diego Ice Arena. Teams didn't disappoint as they combined for six power-play goals. Each team notched three, but it was the Ice Dogs who came out on top, 5-3, sweeping the two preseason games against their Southern California rival.

Evan Cheverie led the way for Long Beach with two goals and assist. Mark Pederson, Andrew Canzanello and Billy Tibbetts each notched goals for the Blue and Orange.

Penalty trouble was the Gulls' bug-a-boo in the first period as Long Beach struck twice with the man advantage to jump ahead 2-0. Cheverie knotted the first power-play marker at 2:11, connecting on passes from Chris Kenady and David Walker. Then with a two-man advantage, Robin Leblanc tickled the twine, off setup feeds from Marco Rosa and Mike Vellinga at 10:49.

Penalty trouble continued to be the theme in the second period, but this time it was the Ice Dogs who found themselves in trouble. San Diego capitalized to knot the score, 2-2.

Long Beach's (and ex-Gull) Yuri Moscevsky got into a scrap with San Diego newcomer Ian Forbes, but Moscevsky was assessed an extra five-minute match penalty for attempting to injure Forbes. On the ensuing power play Pederson, the ECHL leading goal scorer last season, beat Chris Madden at 11:09 to cut the Ice Dogs lead in half.

Canzanello, another Gulls newcomer, put home another power-play goal at 15:19 of the second after taking setup passes from Darren Partch and Mike Garrow.

Cheverie, however, reclaimed Long Beach's lead with his second goal of the night and Long Beach's third power-play goal of the game, beating Trevor Koenig at 19:33 of the second.

The Ice Dogs went ahead, 4-2, as Nathan Martz put one past Koenig 1:58 into the third period, but Tibbetts crept the Gulls back within one with San Diego's third power-play goal at 4:06.

Clark Udle sealed the Ice Dog win at 11:08, one-timing home a pass from Chris Kenady. Cheverie was also awarded an assist on the play.

The regular season is slated to begin Friday in Long Beach with the home opener scheduled for Saturday against the Fresno Falcons. For information about individual tickets or season packages contact 619-224-GOAL, ext. 7. or log onto www.sandiegogulls.com.
