Checkers Earn A Point In 3-2 Shootout Loss To Florida

(Fort Myers, FL - Saturday, November 15, 2003) - The Charlotte Checkers took the Florida Everblades to a shootout Saturday, but fell 3-2 in their second game of back-to-back matches in Fort Myers. Charlotte tied the score at 2-2 late in the third period on a goal by Rory Rawlyk, sending the game to the five-minute, sudden-death overtime session and then to the shootout. Checkers goalie Scott Meyer sparkled once again with a 40 save performance, and new Japanese defenseman Kengo Ito scored his first goal in North America as a professional.

"It was a ! great hockey game tonight," remarked Checkers Head Coach, Don MacAdam. "Scott Meyer was terrific and I'm really pleased with the play of Kengo Ito. The Checkers fans are really going to enjoy watching him play. I'm still looking for our goal scores to start putting the puck in the net. That's our main problem right now."

The Checkers grabbed the lead 1-0 at 17:40 of the first period as Ito's shot bounced off of Everblades goalie Jeff Maund and into the net. Florida tied the game with just 56 seconds left in the period on a goal by Brian McCullough, and the two teams went to the locker room knotted up a 1-1 after one period. Early in the second period Florida grabbed a 2-1 lead as McCullough scored again on a power play just 56 seconds into the frame. The Everblades held their 2-1 advantage until late in the third period when Rawlyk's goal tied the match. After a scoreless, five-minute, sudden-death overtime session, the teams went to the shootout where the Everblades prevailed three goals to two.

The Checkers ended their three-game road trip with a 1-1-1 record, and saw their overall record drop to 3-5-3 for nine points. Florida improved to 8-3-3 for 19 points. The Checkers return to home ice Wednesday night at Cricket Arena whe! n they'll host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:00 p.m.

NOTES: Saturday left wing / defenseman Steve MacIntyre was reassigned to the Checkers from the Hartford Wolf Pack, and right wing Mike Wirll was recalled by Hartford.
