Checkers Donate $323k to Charlotte Community in 2011-12

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Through events, fundraisers, monetary contributions from the team's foundation and the help of fans, the Charlotte Checkers donated $323,094 to local charities and non-profit organizations during the 2011-12 season. The Checkers have now raised $2.3 million since Michael Kahn took ownership of the team in 2006.
Highlighting the season of giving were the annual Pink in the Rink game, presented by Presbyterian Hospital, Salute to Heroes, presented by American Airlines, and Race Night, presented by Hyundai, which raised a combined $81,775.
New events such as the Meat N' Greet charity banquet and Checkers with the Checkers, along with the annual golf tournament, charity adult hockey games and school fundraisers, were also instrumental in giving back to the Charlotte community in 2011-12.
Beneficiaries of donations and fundraisers included, but were not limited to, Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center, Goodwill of the Southern Piedmont, Teach for America, Discovery Place, Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, USO of North Carolina, Children's Organ Transplant Association, Carolina Breast Friends, Special Olympics of North Carolina, Camp Care, United Way of Central Carolinas, families of fallen public service workers and Charlotte-area schools.
The Checkers, with the help of Hendrick Automotive Group and Van Products, Inc., were also able to raise enough funds to present local high school student Forest Walton with a new van at the April 7 game, helping realize the goal of Wheels for Forest, which was started by two local high school students.
The Checkers increased their presence in the community in 2011-12 by making 56 player/coach appearances, dozens of staff member appearances and more than 150 appearances by mascot Chubby.
