Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC-The Charlotte Checkers have agreed to terms with former ECHL All-Star Aaron Slattengren, general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced today.

Slattengren, 27, joins the Checkers after spending most of last season in the American Hockey League with the Portland Pirates and Binghamton Senators. In 64 AHL games he tallied 10 goals and 11 assists. He also skated in the ECHL for the Augusta Lynx where he netted five goals and four assists in only six games.

In 2007-08, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of Duluth, Minn. started the season with the Augusta Lynx before being called up to the AHL's Providence Bruins in mid-January. At the time of his call-up, Slattengren was the ECHL leader in goals with 28 in just 33 games. He was named ECHL Player of the Week on two occasions and was selected to represent the American Conference at the 2008 ECHL All-Star game along with current Checkers Steve Ward and Tyler Doig. On Nov. 27 he tied an ECHL record for the highest plus-minus rating in a single game (+8) while netting four goals and adding three assists in a 9-1 win over Pensacola.

In 96 career ECHL games, the former Lynx captain has 54 goals and 43 assists.

"Not often do we find players that have Aaron's goal scoring ability and character at our level," said Wilkinson. "He and his family are committed to Charlotte and we look forward to seeing him in our line-up."

Before becoming a professional, Slattengren played four seasons at Colorado College in the NCAA, where he helped the Tigers reach the Frozen Four in 2004-05. In 144 career college games he potted 43 goals and added 45 assists.

The Checkers' schedule is now available and they are getting ready for their 17th season of play as a member of the ECHL and 16th as an affiliate of the New York Rangers. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances to date. Season tickets are on sale now.
