Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers today announced that they have added 10 players that were recently assigned from the Carolina Hurricanes to their training camp roster.
Goaltenders Michael Leighton and Alex Nedeljkovic, defensemen Jake Chelios, Keegan Lowe, Dennis Robertson and Matt Tennyson and forwards Andrew Poturalski, Brody Sutter, Brendan Woods and Valentin Zykov will now join the Checkers as they prepare to play their only two preseason games at Lehigh Valley this Friday and Saturday. Leighton, Lowe, Tennyson, Sutter and Woods all cleared NHL waivers at noon on Thursday.
In a corresponding move, the Checkers assigned goaltender Anthony Peters to the ECHL's Florida Everblades and released forwards Matt Berry and Dalton Smith from their tryouts.
An updated training camp roster, which includes 22 players, is attached to this release. The Carolina Hurricanes, who have one exhibition game remaining on Friday before their regular season starts on Oct. 13, now have 32 players remaining on their roster. Charlotte opens its regular season with a pair of road matchups against the Texas Stars on Oct. 14 and 15.
About today's assignments: Leighton, a four-time AHL All Star and former goaltender of the year in 2008, is the AHL's all-time record holder with 46 career shutouts. Nedeljkovic, a 20-year-old rookie, was the Hurricanes' second-round draft choice in 2014. He was the starting goaltender for the United States at the 2016 World Junior championship. Chelios, the son of NHL Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Chelios, ranked second among Checkers defensemen with 31 points (7g, 24a) last season. Woods, the son of current Buffalo Sabres assistant coach Bob Woods, enters his fourth professional season with Charlotte. Poturalski, a 22-year-old rookie, ranked second among all NCAA skaters in scoring and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the nation's top collegiate player with the University of New Hampshire last season.
