Chaves, Revs Broil Crabs in Ninth
July 21, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
York, Pa.)- Brandon Chaves bounced a walk-off two-run single down the right field line as the York Revolution upended the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-4 on Thursday afternoon at PeoplesBank Park. The Revs (7-6, 47-36) capped a 5-1 homestand with a series win over the Blue Crabs (5-9, 31-52), their ninth series win in 12 at home this season.
Down 4-2 against All-Star closer Cody Eppley, Joel Guzman and Andres Perez notched back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Kevin Rivers followed with a sharp grounder up the middle that ricocheted off the mound and into center, allowing Guzman to score and sending Perez to third. Bryan Pounds worked a full-count walk to load the bases and bring up Chaves.
On a 2-1 pitch from Eppley, Chaves skipped a groundball over the glove of Zach Wilson at first base, bringing home the tying and winning runs and sending the jubilant Revs out to mob their latest hero.
Chaves becomes the fifth man to seal the deal on York's five walk-off hits this season.
"I was just trying to help the team as best as I could," said Chaves right before receiving a dousing from the water bucket on a hot afternoon. "They had the infield in so I was trying to put the ball in play. I got a ball up and was able to put the barrel on it."
Nate Reed (1-0) earned his first decision in his third appearance with the Revs after pitching a scoreless ninth. Eppley (2-1) did not record an out during his fourth blown save of the season. Southern Maryland came into the afternoon 21-0 when leading after eight innings.
Jared Mitchell dropped a one-out single into left in the first inning and went to second on a wild pitch. Perez then brought him home with a two-out single that one-hopped the Arch Nemesis in left field, and the Revs took an early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Crabs got that run back and then some in the top of the third. Antoan Richardson led off with a double and eventually came home on Wilson's sac fly. After Ryde Rodriguez drew a two-out walk, Michael Snyder belted a two-run homer to just right of dead center, giving the visitors a sudden 3-1 lead.
Angel Sanchez added to the Southern Maryland lead with a line drive solo home run in the top of the fifth. York's Travis Witherspoon returned the favor in the sixth, tagging a liner to the left of the left center playground to make it 4-2.
Jose Arredondo pitched a pair of perfect innings in the seventh and eighth before handing the ball to Reed for a spotless ninth, setting up Chaves's heroics.
Mitchell and Perez each led the way for the Revs with two hits and a run.
Richardson managed a pair of hits and a run for Southern Maryland.
Notes: The Revs won their 27th comeback victory of the season, nine shy of the team record of 36 (2008, 2014). Mitchell has now hit safely in 13 of his first 15 Revolution games (.290, 18-62). Chaves joins Telvin Nash, Perez, Josh Wilson, and Mitchell with walk-off hits for the Revs this season. The Revs will now make their final flight down to Sugar Land for a three-game weekend set with the Skeeters. James Simmons (7-3, 3.82) will get the nod on Friday night. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 7:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
