Chasers Outslugged by the Redbirds, 13-9, on Wednesday

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers could not withstand the offensive onslaught of the Memphis Redbirds and fell to the St. Louis Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate, 13-9, on Wednesday afternoon. Catcher Max Ramirez went 2-for-4 in the contest with two home runs and three RBI. Each starter for Memphis scored at least one run in their win over Omaha.
Southpaw Ryan Verdugo (5-2) was hit with the loss after getting roughed up for five runs over six hits in 4.2 innings. Reliever Sean O'Sullivan did not fare much better against the free-swinging Redbirds as he worked 1.2 innings and was touched for six runs. Blaine Hardy worked the game's final 2.2 innings and gave up two runs over four hits.
The Storm Chasers (45-28) picked up two runs in the second inning on Ramirez' two-run home run. The Redbirds (26-47) cut the lead in half in the third when rehabbing Cardinal Jon Jay hit a solo homer of his own.
Memphis' offense exploded in the fifth to the tune of four runs after an RBI single by Eugenio Velez and a three-run shot by Mark Hamilton, put Omaha in a 5-2 hole. The Storm Chasers did strike for a run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to Ramirez' solo bomb.
The Redbirds seized an 8-3 lead in the sixth after pushing home three runs. However, the Chasers would not back down and posted three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run shot by right fielder David Lough.
From that point on, it was essentially all Memphis as they pushed across four runs in the seventh to go up 12-6. Omaha was able to tally two runs in the home half of the eighth on a two-run jack by Tony Abreu to come within four runs of the Redbirds. Memphis added a final insurance run in the ninth while Omaha's Wil Myers' ninth inning RBI single wrapped up the scoring for the Chasers as they eventually fell, 13-9.
The Storm Chasers and the Redbirds will play again on Thursday, live on television, at 7:05 p.m. Thursday's game can be seen on air across the region on Time Warner Cable Metro Sports in the Kansas City area, in Lincoln, Neb., as well as on Cox Channel 2 in Omaha.
