Aces Use 9th-Inning Rally to Top Rainiers, 7-3

TACOMA, Wash.-Saddled with a one-run deficit through eight innings, the Reno Aces rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to escape with a 7-3 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers Tuesday night in the series opener at Cheney Stadium.

With the game knotted at 2-2, Tacoma took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out, solo home run off the bat of Trayvon Robinson. But the Aces would answer in the ninth.

Down a run in the final frame, two singles sandwiched a base on balls to load the bases with nobody out in the inning for the Aces. A wild pitch chased home the tying run, then the go-ahead run came across on a fielding error by Rainiers catcher Adam Moore. After that, a run-scoring groundout and a two-run triple gave the Aces plenty of insurance for Jonathan Albaladejo to close out the proceedings in the bottom half of the ninth.

The win marked Reno's 15th-straight over the Rainiers, and the Aces improved to 18-6 against the Pacific North Division this season. Reno has won six of its last seven games and 13 of the last 15. The club's 14 wins this month are most in all of Minor League Baseball, and Reno's nine-game lead in the division is its largest of the season.

Aces starter Trevor Bauer took a no decision, scattering a pair of solo home runs over 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts. Reliever Jensen Lewis (2-0) earned the win, despite surrendering the go-ahead homer in the eighth.

The loss fell to Steve Delabar (0-1), who allowed five runs-though just one earned-in one inning of work out of the Rainiers bullpen.

At the plate for Reno, the Pacific Coast League's top-three batters-Adam Eaton, Jake Elmore and Ryan Wheeler-all registered two hits on the evening. Elmore stretched his hitting streak to 27 games, Eaton scored for the 19th-consecutive game, and Wheeler drove home his league-leading 65th run.

The series continues on Wednesday night at Cheney Stadium. RHP Joe Martinez (6-3, 5.07 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while RHP Jeff Marquez (4-8, 6.91 ERA) takes the ball for the Rainiers.
