Connecticut Sun News Release
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (March 30, 2012) - Connecticut Sun center Tina Charles was among 11 players named to the 2012 United States Olympic Women's Basketball Team Friday by USA Basketball.
Charles joins Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx, Swin Cash and Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky, Sue Bird of the Seattle Storm, Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury, Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever, Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks and Angel McCoughtry of the Atlanta Dream on the team. It will be Charles' first Olympics.
"We are very proud and excited for Tina to be representing the United States and, in turn, the Connecticut Sun in this summer's Olympic Games," Sun General Manager and Vice President Chris Sienko said Friday. "We wish Tina, her teammates and (National Team) coach Geno Auriemma much luck and success!"
The 2010 WNBA Rookie of the Year, Charles has quickly established herself as one of the dominant young centers in the world. She has the two highest single-season rebounding totals in WNBA history (398 in 2010, 374 in 2011), and the two highest single-season totals for double-doubles (23 in 2011, 22 in 2010). She led the Sun in scoring and rebounding in both 2010 and 2011, and is the fastest player in league history to reach 400, 500, 600 and 700 career rebounds.
Charles will be part of a U.S. Olympic women's basketball team shooting for its fifth straight - seventh overall - gold medal. The United States will carry a 33-game Olympic winning streak into the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London. The women's basketball competition will be held from July 28-August 11.
The Sun open their 10th season on May 19th at New York, and will return home to host the Liberty the next day at Mohegan Sun Arena at 5 p.m.
