Charge Rally to Take Down Vipers
December 21, 2014 - NBA G League (G League)
Cleveland Charge News Release
The Canton Charge (9-6), presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, came back from down 18 to top the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (5-8), 110-100, at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo on Saturday night.
The Vipers came out the gate to start the game on a 21-3 run in the first 5:41 thanks in part to forcing Charge misses on their first 11 attempts from the field as a team. Canton bounced back to hit eight of their next nine attempts from the field, including 13 points from Michael Dunigan, to cut the deficit to 31-22 after the opening quarter.
After giving up 62 points to the Vipers' offense at the half on 21-of-42 team shooting (50%), the Charge locked down on defense in the second half to allow just 38 points on 13-of-40 shooting (33%) from the hosts. The difference came in the paint, where Canton stayed steady all game in outscoring Rio Grande Valley 76-50 on high-percentage opportunities in the lane to couple with their lockdown defense.
Arinze Onuaku posted season-highs in points (32), rebounds (17) and blocks (3) in 36 minutes to lead Canton. Michael Dunigan also set new season-best marks by netting 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting with 12 boards and a steal in 32 minutes. Justin Johnson provided a spark off the bench with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting with six assists in 29 minutes. Stephen Holt added 11 points and two steals in 28 minutes.
Jarvis Threatt paced the Vipers with 25 points, five assists and two steals in 33 minutes. Chris Johnson supplied 39 points, nine boards and two blocks in 39 minutes. Tony Bishop scored 14 points in 37 minutes, while Akli Mitchell posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds with six assists and two steals in 40 minutes.
