Champs Hang on in Close One with Aigles

OTTAWA - It came down to the last batter, but the Ottawa Champions hung on for a 7-5 victory over the Trois-Rivières Aigles Sunday afternoon at Stade Stereo+ in Trois-Rivières.

LHP Scott Maine struck out 3B Taylor Brennan with a man on first to secure the win. Maine earned his second save in less than 24 hours in the process.

Champions starter RHP Edilson Alvarez was cruising through his outing, having surrendered two runs over six innings. In the seventh, 1B Kevin Cornelius drove in two runs with a single, but Alvarez helped his own cause by making a heads-up defensive play to get Brennan, who was trying to advance to third on the play. The putout got Alvarez out of the inning, but not before the Aigles took a 7-5 lead.

Ottawa responded in the very next frame with three runs of their own. 3B Jordan Caillouet was driven in by 1B Vinny Guglietti. Guglietti would later score on a wild pitch, while LF Michael Hungate was plated via a SS Daniel Bick sacrifice fly.

The two-run advantage was all the bullpen would need, as RHP Andrew Cooper, LHP Evan Rutckyj and Maine combined for two scoreless innings to ensure the victory.
