OTTAWA - Maikol Gonzalez lined a base-hit into left field in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Brian Portelli and Chris Bosco, as the Ottawa Champions (1-1) walked off the New Jersey Jackals (1-1), 3-2, on Saturday night at RCGT Park.
The Jackals scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning to give them a 2-1 lead. Ronnie Mitchel came into score on a throwing error by Ottawa catcher Matt Foley.
Champions reliever Austin Glorius (Win, 1-0) pitched the ninth inning, allowing one run on two hits, walking one and striking out two. Jackals closer David Richardson (Loss, 0-1, Blown Save, 1) gave up a leadoff walk to start the ninth, followed by a base hit and a walk to load the bases. Maikol Gonzalez turned on an inside heater from Richardson and lined the ball into left field for the game-winning hit.
Gonzalez did his in-game homework and was looking for his pitch.
"When I was on deck, I saw that he was throwing a lot of sinkers inside and that he walked a lot of people (Champions players) with that same pitch," said Gonzalez. "I had that in mind when I came up to bat. I just wanted to be ready for it and that's what I did."
Ottawa Champions manager Sebastien Boucher records the first managerial win of his Can-Am League career.
"It was a great win and the guys fought hard,"said manager Sebastien Boucher on his team's first win of the season. "We had a tough time producing during the game, so being able to battle back in the ninth is great. The guys showed real heart tonight and I'm proud of them."
Champions starter Austin Chrismon allowed just one run over five innings, striking out three. Heath Bowers tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Chrismon and struck out a career-high six batters.
Leonardo Reginatto went 3-for-3 with a walk, Brian Portelli punched two hits and an RBI, and Maikol Gonzalez ended 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
