Champions Snap Sussex County's Home Win Streak with Win in Second Game of Twin Bill
August 15, 2018 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - Yet another gem of a start from RHP Jordan Kurokawa was all the Ottawa Champions needed to snap the longest home winning streak in Can-Am League history.
That came in Game 2 of a double header in Augusta, NJ against the Sussex County Miners. After dropping the first game 4-3, the Champions built off a six-inning outing for Kurokawa and cruised to a 7-3 win in the second game.
Sussex County had won 16 straight home games coming into the second game. They set a league record earlier that night, passing a mark they had already set earlier in the 2018 season. The Miners are 35-8 at Skylands Stadium this year.
The first game of the set in Sussex County was resumed in the first inning with the Champions up 1-0, and the Miners had the first runs after the game resumed. INF Jarred Mederos and new acquisition INF Jared McDonald had back-to-back knocks to give the Miners a 2-1 lead.
INF Daniel Bick would tie the game for Ottawa with his third home run of the season, but Sussex County would re-take the lead in the fifth and didn't look back.
RHP Steve Borkowski was the losing pitcher, allowing seven hits and four runs. Notably, only two of those runs were earned.
RHP Andrew Cooper also made an appearance. It was the 80th of his career as a Champion, which puts him into sole possession of the all-time lead for appearances by a Champions pitcher. He passes RHP Tyler Wilson. Cooper threw a perfect bottom of the sixth inning, striking out one batter in the process.
The second game of the night saw Kurokawa pick up where he left off against Sussex County. He shut out the Miners after eight innings in his last start against them on Friday, August 3.
This time around, the Can-Am League's reigning pitcher of the month kept Sussex County guessing again. They only amassed three hits over Kurokawa's six innings of work, including one earned run on an RBI single from OF Breland Almadova.
The Champions will get back to action Thursday, August 16 when they travel to Pomona, NY to face the Rockland Boulders in a four-game series that spans the weekend. This road trip continued until the Champions return home to play at RCGT Park on Friday, August 24.
Tickets for all Champions home games are available at www.ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255).
