Champions Lose to Miners 7-3

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Champions dropped the third and final game of their series with the Sussex County Miners 7-3 on Sunday. The Champions scored two runs in the ninth inning to make the score respectable, but the Miners pitchers shut them down for the majority of the game.

"You can't give up that many runs and that many hits every day and expect to win ballgames," said manager Hal Lanier following the loss. "We had three hits going in to the last inning, we have to do a much better job with that. A couple of guys came in from the bullpen today and did a good job, but overall we have to be better."

RHP Miles Sheehan went four innings while only surrendering four hits and giving up two runs. It was Sheehan's first start in professional baseball, and he has proven this year that he can be depended on out of bullpen or in the rotation.

It got ugly for the Champions in the sixth inning, when the Miners scored four runs. Back-to-back-to-back doubles ended RHP Steve Borkowski's day out of the bullpen, and all but put the game to bed.

3B Jordan Caillouet had a good day at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two walks. Caillouet came across to score when CF Chase Harris doubled him home in the ninth. DH Sebastien Boucher is back to his usual self, as Sunday was his second straight 1-for-3 game with a walk.

The Champions will resume their lengthy homestand against the first-place Quebec Capitales on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
