Spokane Chiefs News Release
The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-3 on Tuesday night, earning a free Chalupa from Taco Bell for all 3,369 fans in the Spokane Arena. Chris Bruton sealed the free goodie when he tallied with 1:07 remaining in the game. For Bruton, it was his third goal of the season and for the Chiefs, they remain perfect at home with a 3-0 record.
In a game where both teams tallied twice even-strenghted, the Chiefs special teams was the difference scoring four times, including their first shorthanded goal of the season. Spokane ended the night 3-5 on the power play, raising their season percentage to 24.3, third in the WHL. The Chiefs have scored a power play goal in each game this year.
Chad Klassen scored the Chiefs first goal of the night at 8:57 of the first, with Spokane skating with the man advantage. Sean Zimmerman and Scott Lynch, who had his seventh helper of the season, assisted on the play.
Lethbridge tied the score at 13:59 of the opening frame with a goal by Kyle Pess.
Eighteen-year-old Joe Logan blistered a one-timer from the top of the right circle for his first goal as a Chief 17:53 into the first. The power play goal gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes. The Chiefs outshot Lethbridge 11-4 in the first.
The Hurricanes struck first in the middle frame with a breakaway four-on-four goal by John Lammers seven minutes in. The Chiefs pulled back ahead at 11:21 as Chad Klassen one-timed a shot off the face off from the slot as Spokane was killing one of Lethbridge's four power plays on the night. Adam Hobson won a clean draw in the right circle to Klassen, whose right handed shot beat Scott Bolland, Lethbridge's second keeper of the night, on the stick side.
Not long after, just 22-seconds following the Klassen goal, the Hurricanes tied it up again on the power play with a goal by Michal Gulasi.
The Chiefs scored the remaining three goals on the night, all coming in the third period, for their third win on the season. Spokane evened their record at 3-3, good for six points on the year, just two points back of a three team log jam in first in the US Divsion.
Jeff Lynch scored his second goal of the season at the 9:22 mark when he ripped a shot from the slot. Derek Ryan and Steven Gillen each had assists.
Ned Lukacevic scored the Chiefs third power play goal of the night, from Chad Klassen and Jim Watt, when he slammed home a shot on the fly. Lukacevic let it fly after a drop pass from Klassen, the Chiefs leading scorer, when the two criss-crossed in the Lethbridge zone.
Bruton finished the night with just over a minute left on a flurry in front of the net. J.P. Szaszkiewicz and Myles Stoesz each earned their first points of the season.
Jim Watt stopped 30 Lethbridge shots, including 26 in the final two periods for his third win of the season.
