San Diego Wave FC News Release
San Diego Wave FC (6-5-2, 20 points) is heading up north to take on Angel City FC (3-6-4, 13 points) this Wednesday, June 28, at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles for a UKG NWSL Challenge Cup game. The match will air on the CBS Sports Network with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. PT.
The all-time series currently sits at 2-2-0 (W-L-D) making it even. In the 2022 regular season, each team came out with a win and San Diego's came in their first-ever match at Snapdragon Stadium on Sept. 17 to a sold-out crowd of 32,000 fans. Forward Jaedyn Shaw scored in the 30th minute of the match which ended up being the game-winner for the Wave, resulting in a 1-0 shutout at their new stadium.
San Diego lost to Angel City nearly two weeks ago on June 17, in a 1-2 scoring game which marked the Wave's first loss to their California rivals since July 8, 2022. The last time San Diego traveled to BMO Stadium was April 23 when the Wave shutout Angel City 2-0 with goals from forward Sofia Jakobsson in the 70th minute and forward Makenzy Doniak in the 75th minute.
Most recently, Angel City is coming off of a scoreless draw on Sunday against the Houston Dash. In their last two matches, the Los Angeles team has stayed undefeated since parting ways with their former head coach, Freya Coombe.
San Diego is coming off their second straight loss as they faced OL Reign on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium. Forward Jaedyn Shaw put the Wave on the board two minutes after halftime in the 47th minute to score her fourth goal of the season but ultimately San Diego fell 1-2.
Wednesday's match against Angel City will mark the Wave's halfway point in the UKG Challenge Cup. They are currently sitting in third place with three points, tied with Portland Thorns.
