Toronto Argonauts News Release
Mississauga - Team records are crumbling and league records are in jeopardy of falling as electrifying WR/KR Chad Owens continues to tear through the CFL. Owens has now earned a single-season team-high six CFL Player of the Week awards (weeks 2, 7, 12, 14, 17 and now 18), and for the second straight week, he has been named a unanimous selection for CFL Special Teams Player of the Week.
Owens is flying high as he leads Toronto's only playoff-bound club into the post-season. In week 18 against Montreal, the Fly'n Hawaiian accumulated 308 all-purpose yards and became just the fifth player in CFL history to record 1,000 punt and kickoff return yards in a season. In all, he returned 4 punts for 111 yards, 27.8 AVG, LG 63, had 4 kickoff returns for 123 yards, AVG. 30.8, LG 51, and 1 missed field goal return for 60 yards. He also chipped in with a 14-yard touchdown reception on offence, his seventh major of the season.
Owens, who leads the CFL in punt (1,060) and kickoff return (1,216) yards, is poised to set new single-season club records in both categories this week. He is second in CFL history for most total kick return yards in a season (2,701 yards on kickoff, punt and missed field goal returns), currently leads the CFL with 3,288 combined yards and should finish the season among the top-5 greatest combined yards seasons in CFL history.
Toronto takes on the Alouettes this Sunday afternoon at McGill Stadium in Montreal to close out the regular season; kickoff is at 4:00 p.m. ET. The Argonauts then officially head into the CFL playoffs and take on Hamilton at Ivor Wynne Stadium in the East Semi-Final on Sunday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m.
The Argonauts also announced today that Belleville, Ontario native FB Peter Quinney has signed a practice roster agreement with the club.
