CFL Canadian Football League

CFL names players of the week

August 31, 2004 - Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Offensive Player of the Week

RB – Mike Pringle #34

Edmonton Eskimos

Highlights

Pringle scored four (4) touchdowns from the red zone.

Game Notes:

Mike Pringle and quarterback Jason Maas both played outstanding football and deserve this honour. I favoured Pringle because he was able to deliver those vital yards around the goal line. Most teams last week came up short in this area and had to settle for errant field goal attempts.

Pringle and the Eskimos' efficient offensive line got this job done four times.

1st Runner Up: Jason Maas #12, Edmonton Eskimos

2nd Runner Up: Antonio Warren #34, BC Lions

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Defensive Player of the Week

DB – Donny Brady #26

Edmonton Eskimos

Highlights

Brady had outstanding defensive backfield play and had two (2) interceptions that shifted momentum and led to Eskimo touchdowns.

Game Notes:

Brady had a good feel for the ball and his play was smart and instinctive. I was impressed with his ability to turn and run with receivers; to stay in their hip pocket and break on the ball at the last moment. His anticipation of pass routes was outstanding in this game. Brady was a playmaker who made things happen.

1st Runner Up: Joey Boese #23, Calgary Stampeders

2nd Runner Up: Duane Butler #25, Montreal Alouettes

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Lineman of the Week

DE – Brent Johnson #97

BC Lions

Highlights

Johnson had terrific defensive line play that included four (4) tackles, one (1) sack, one (1) pass knocked down and several hurries.

Game Notes:

Johnson did an excellent job of recognizing blocking schemes and controlling his area. I liked his play on and off the line, his hustle and desire. I think he was dominant because he usually beat the blockers off the ball and was upfield before they could restrain him. He was an explosive force against both the run and the pass.

1st Runner Up: Eric England #95, Toronto Argonauts

2nd Runner Up: Carl Coulter #51, Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Special Teams Player of the Week

WR – Ezra Landry #16

Montreal Alouettes

Highlights

Landry had excellent kick returns against the Blue Bombers, including a record 120 yard return of a missed field goal attempt.

Game Notes:

Another spectacular kick return for Landry. He was elusive in the open field and showed the ability to make big plays. I was impressed with his patience on the touchdown run. He lingered in the end zone, looking for a seam in the coverage. When he found one, he was off for the other goal line.

1st Runner Up: Keith Stokes #3, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

2nd Runner Up: Derrick Lewis #17, BC Lions

Judge: Ellison Kelly
