CF Montréal Hosts Vaughan SC Tuesday in the Preliminary Round of the Canadian Championship
April 17, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - CF Montréal will begin its 2023 Canadian Championship journey on Tuesday against Vaughan SC in the tournament's preliminary round at 7pm at Stade Saputo (OneSoccer, BPM Sports, TSN 690).
Following Saturday night's home loss to D.C. United, CF Montréal will briefly set aside its MLS campaign as the Club gets set to play its first cup match of the year in a tournament Montreal has won five times in its history.
The fixture will also mark a first-ever meeting with Vaughan, a semi-professional side from League1 Ontario, which booked its ticket by topping the Ontario league table in 2022. Vaughan will be playing only its second competitive game of the year, having only begun the regular season on April 12. The team played to a 2-2 draw against the North Toronto Nitros.
CF Montréal's overall record in the Canadian Championship stands at 14-11-8 with 44 goals scored and 40 goals allowed, since 2012. At Stade Saputo, the record is 11-0-4 with a goal differential of +20.
Against non-MLS sides more specifically, Montreal has a 7-1-1 record with a +9 goal differential (4-0-0 at Stade Saputo).
As a reminder, the six winners of the 2023 Canadian Championship preliminary round will progress to the quarterfinals of the tournament (May 9-11) where they will be joined by last year's two finalists, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (defending champions) and Toronto FC (2022 finalists), who both received a bye to the next round.
The winner of the 2023 Canadian Championship will lift the Voyageurs Cup and qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Champions League. The Concacaf Champions League winner will also automatically qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup.
