CF Montréal Hosts Forge FC Wednesday in the Canadian Championship Semifinal
May 23, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - After defeating Toronto FC in the quarterfinals, CF Montréal will host Forge FC in the Canadian Championship semifinals at 7pm this Wednesday at Stade Saputo (OneSoccer, BPM Sports, TSN 690).
This will be the third meeting between the sides in Canadian Championship action with the Montrealers holding a 2-0-0 record against the defending Canadian Premier League champions.
In their inaugural clash in 2021, also in the semifinal round, Montreal narrowly advanced in a shootout (8-7) after playing to a scoreless draw in regulation time at Tim Hortons Field. The following year, the Bleu-blanc-noir dispatched the Hamiltonians 3-0 in the quarterfinals at Stade Saputo thanks to a hat trick by forward Sunusi Ibrahim.
Ibrahim has eight career goals with Montreal, including four in MLS regular season play and four in the Canadian Championship. The Nigerian remains the only active CF Montréal player to score a hat trick in a Canadian Championship game.
The other semifinal will also be played on Wednesday but on Canada's west coast, as Vancouver Whitecaps FC (MLS) take on Pacific FC (PLC) in an all-B.C. clash.
Based on Canada Soccer's draw of the tournament this year, should CF Montréal advance, the championship match would be hosted by the winner of the Whitecaps-Pacific match, either at BC Place in Vancouver or Starlight Stadium in Langford.
The winner of the 2023 Canadian Championship will lift the Voyageurs Cup and qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Champions League. The Concacaf Champions League winner will also automatically qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup.
